We’ve had a variety of groups, classes, families and individuals stop by for a tour of our gardens. We’re happy to show people around.
Our usual tour starts at the house with the kitchen garden, a look at the bee hives, an explanation of our rain water management systems, and a look at the rain garden and ornamental beds.
From there we wander down to the Community Garden where we look at what all our fellow-gardeners are growing, we talk about the raised beds and the gravity fed rainwater system.
Then we wander up the street to the Eco-Garden where we talk about the dilapidated houses that used to be there and what it took to convert the lots into thriving greenspace, we explain the garden design and answer any questions about the variety of plants we have there.
Then a short walk over to the new vermicomost system to talk about our collaboration with area restaurants to convert kitchen waste into rich organic medium for the garden.
And finally we stop in at the Community Garden Resource Shed to show off this wonderful tool-lending program the Kalamazoo County Land Bank and Common Ground Kalamazoo put together to benefit all community gardens in the area.
It’s a pretty good tour really. It takes about a half hour, maybe a little longer with more people and depending on how many questions people have. If you are interested in touring the gardens or bringing a group to tour, please contact us and we’ll set it up with you.
